The Foundation of Virtue

What does humility look like in daily life? How does humility lay the groundwork for other virtues? What are some of the common misconceptions around humility? These are just a few questions I posed to Dr. Kevin Vost (author of Humble Strength), this week on In Search of Wisdom.

Misconceptions about Humility

To the question, “What are some common misconceptions around humility?” Dr. Vost explains,

There are all kinds of misconceptions about the nature of humility, what it is, and the kinds of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors it produces. Many people today do unfortunately associate humility with feelings of low self-esteem at best or self-loathing at worst, implying that if you are a humble person, you do not feel that you have what it takes to be successful or happy, and therefore you act meekly and submissively toward others; or that you do not feel worthy of happiness and success, and therefore you believe it fitting to wallow in lowliness and abandon any efforts toward joy and fulfillment in life.
