Dear Fellow Traveler,
How much silence do you have in your life? Or, put another way, how much silence do you need?
The late Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh would often stress the importance of silence. He said, “Silence is essential. We need silence just as much as we need air, just as much as plants need light. If our minds are crowded with words and thoughts, there is no space for us.”
It is easy to overlook the value and essential nature of silence.
Silence is needed in various aspects of life, even in music. The American Trappist monk Thomas Merton observed that music is pleasing not only because of the sound but also because of the silence.
