Philosophy as a Way of Life
Letter 16, On Philosophy, the Guide of Life
It is clear to you, I’m sure, my dear Lucilius, that no one can live a happy life—or even a bearable one—without studying wisdom. You also know that a happy life is achieved when our wisdom is complete, but life becomes at least bearable as soon as wisdom truly begins within us.
This idea, though clear, needs to be reinforced and deepened through daily reflection. It’s more important for you to uphold the resolutions you’ve already made than to keep creating new and noble ones. You must persevere and gain new strength through consistent study until what is now merely a good intention becomes a firm, steady purpose.
