🛋️ The Weekend Review
The weekend review consolidates the week’s meditations, videos, and podcasts. It allows us to revisit, review, and meditate on the art of living. Each installment also includes a short contemplation (from a notable work) with guided reflection questions to consider.
📿 On Deep Listening
This week’s contemplation comes from the American psychologist Carl Rogers (1902—1987). In his classic work A Way of Being, Rogers writes,
When I say that I enjoy hearing someone, I mean, of course, hearing deeply. I mean that I hear the words, the thoughts, the feeling tones, the personal meaning, even the meaning that is below the conscious intent of the speaker. Sometimes too, in a message which superficially is not very important, I hear a deep human cry that lies buried and unknown far below the surface of the person. …
Rogers goes on to ask,
So I have learned to ask myself, can I hear the sounds and sense the shape of this other person’s inner world? Can I resonate with what he is saying so deeply that I sense the meanings he is afraid of yet would like to communicate, as well as those he knows? …
Contemplation Questions (Pick one or create your own!):
What does “deep listening” mean to you?
How can you begin to listen deeply in daily life?
